IT/OT Compass – Independent Advisory Service

Well thought is half done!

Maybe IT is asking questions nobody in your team can answer.
Maybe OT is playing hard to get (“yes, but we are special!”).
Maybe someone above you has already promised the AI project and you have to deliver.
Or maybe you just don’t know where to start…

That’s where we come in!
Explore The IT/OT Compass, our Independent Advisory Services

Nobody is short of options.

Everybody is short of direction.

Technology is typically not what you’re short of.

In most organisations we’ve worked with, the struggle is making the right decisions, getting IT, OT and Operations to speak the same language, and building the team that can carry it.

That’s why we built The IT/OT Insider: to share what we and others have learned, build a community around it, demystify the concepts, and stay technology-neutral throughout.

We’ve learned that people take what they need in different ways.
Some read, some listen.
Sometimes the Academy is the right fit.
And sometimes it’s better if we simply come to you.

Start where everybody starts: Blog, Podcast, Videos

Three years of articles, the podcast and the YouTube channel — plus every framework we’ve built, from the Data Journey Model over the Industrial Data Platform Capability Map, to our Workshop Guide. Free, open, and yours to use without asking us. We believe in sharing knowledge, and we’ll continue doing so!

When you want structure: Book or Academy

The IT/OT Handbook and the IT/OT Academy give you structure, mental models and more depth: what to understand first, how to get IT and OT actually cooperating, and how to scale it without starting over. In the Academy, our live time goes entirely to deep-dives, Q&A, real-world examples, networking and peer knowledge-sharing.

When you want us: Our Advisory Services

Sometimes reading isn’t enough. The decision is in front of you now, the deadline is real, and you’d rather not learn this one the expensive way.

We can be your compass through those steps: finding the low-hanging fruit, architecting for the years ahead rather than until the next question comes in, making sure IT and OT are working with and not against eachother.

That’s the IT/OT Compass. We help you pave the road to your next IT/OT, Data or AI project.

Who we typically work with

You’ll probably recognise yourself in one of these

You're in OT or Operations
  • You have genuinely excellent SCADA, PLC and automation engineers, but you lack to knowledge to define the right path forward for your Data or AI projects.
  • IT is knocking at your door asking for access to your data, and you’re not sure what saying yes actually commits you to.
  • You’ve seen the videos about the Unified Namespace, and now you want one. You’re not yet sure whether you need one.
  • Your operations manager has asked you to detail a plan to use AI to improve efficiency, reduce scrap or cut energy and you don’t know where to start.
You're in IT, Data or OpEx
  • You need someone who can translate what you’re proposing into something Operations recognises — and translate their objections back into something you can act on.
  • You went to the sites to collect requirements and came back with more problems than answers.
  • You have a perfectly good enterprise data platform, and time-series data with context that changes every batch does not fit into it.
  • Your pilots demo beautifully and never reach the second line, the second plant or the second year.
  • You’re about to standardise something globally, and you’d like to know now — not after go-live — where the shop floor will push back.
You're a Vendor or Integrator
  • Your customer needs a neutral moderator in the room: someone with no product to place and no implementation revenue at stake.
  • You’d rather quote against a properly defined goal than against a vague RFP. A badly scoped tender costs you as much as it costs them.
  • You want to give a customer real education on architecture and ways of working, and you know it lands better when it isn’t your logo on the slides.
  • You are looking for an (advisory) board member

We’re happy to be brought in by a vendor. Our independence isn’t part of the negotiation, and your customer will know exactly what we are before we walk in.

We worked with companies including:

What we can do for you

Three moments where an outside voice pays for itself

[1] Before the project — finding the direction

Typically the RFI phase, or before there is even a project defined.

  • Data Maturity Assessment Workshop. Current state, future state, next step, with IT, OT and Operations in the same room. We’ve run dozens of these (if you want to do this yourself: you can find our free Workshop Moderation Guide here).
  • A grounded as-is assessment, technical and organisational. What you already have, what’s quietly working in pockets nobody knows about, and which of our eight cooperation patterns you’re actually operating today.
  • A tailored ITOT.Academy for your team, aimed at the decision in front of you — for example, data architecture options specific to your goal, rather than the general programme.
  • Getting management to commit. The value of enabling technology is real but indirect. We help you build the story that survives a budget meeting.
[2] Choosing — the decision

Typically the RFP phase.

  • A business case for the platform, not just the use case. The savings come from reduced project risk, faster turnaround and reused knowledge. That argument needs to be made properly.
  • Turning the Capability Map into an RFP that vendors can answer and you can compare.
  • Selecting the right vendor and the right integrator. What to ask, what to weight, and which promises to discount.
  • Designing the route from project to product organisation, before the project structure makes that route impossible.
[3] During implementation — keeping the project on track

As part of your (executive) steering committee.

  • We take a seat at the table to make sure the right question gets asked at the right time.
  • We challenge “we’ll fix that in phase two” while it’s still cheap to fix.
  • We watch for the early plateau signals — new data sources getting harder to add, maintenance crowding out new work, growing key-person dependency — and flag them before they become a stall.
What we Do Not Do (and that is equally important to know!)
  • We don’t implement. No integration, no configuration, no managed services.
  • We don’t resell.
  • We won’t hand you a ninety-slide strategy you can’t do anything with.

We will however introduce you to the right people. When you need an integrator, a vendor or a specialist, we know most of them and we’ll point you at the ones who fit your context. Then we either step back, or stay on as the independent voice in the room. Your call.

★ Why Us?

We've been on both sides of this table

David Ariens is a mathematical engineer. He started as a data scientist and moved into industrial digitalisation in 2010. He was industrial digitalisation director at BASF Antwerp until 2022, then ran Analytics For Industry until late 2025. Today he works full-time on bringing real digital transformation to manufacturing, process and infrastructure companies.

Willem van Lammeren is a chemical engineer who ended up in IT/OT doing projects in logistics, labs and production in Food&Bev companies and in chemicals. Today, he’s still in the chemical industry, at Syensqo, and still finds excuses to go and geek out in production.

Between us we’ve written the IT/OT Insider for three years, built the ITOT.Academy — our first students scored it 9 out of 10 — and now published The IT/OT Handbook. All of it vendor-neutral.

We’ve sat through the sales pitch as customers. We’ve also had to give the pitch. That’s why we’re careful about which side of the table we sit on with you.
